THE “SILENT” YEARS OF THE SAVIOR
Many theologians and scholars have surmised what our Lord Jesus Christ was doing in the 30 years prior to the debut of his earthly ministry. From Luke chapter 2 to Luke Chapter 4, two short chapters, eighteen years of Jesus life seemingly pass into anonymity. However, while I studied this passage, I had a spiritual CSI moment. A forensic clue scripturally that pieced together a prophetic picture of the “silent years” of the savior.
I want you to notice something in Heb. 5:7-9 where the Holy Spirit describes a phrase of Christ’s earthly prayer life:
7 Jesus, in the days of His flesh, offered prayers and pleadings, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to deliver Him from death. And God heard his prayers because of his deep reverence for God. 8 Even though Jesus was God’s Son, he learned obedience from the things he suffered. 9 In this way, God qualified him as a perfect High Priest, and he became the source of eternal salvation for all those who obey him.
Notice here it says in the days of His “flesh” not in the days of His “Ministry”. Not while he was walking the shore of Galilee, but while he was building chairs and tables in His little carpentry shop. For 18 years, Jesus was crying out to God, and it even goes as far to say that he was so passionate in prayer, that he wept before the Lord many times in prayer as a young man. based the implication of this verse, I believe Jesus spent a majority of His time outside of working and providing for his family, simply interceding and supplicating before the Lord. He was doing what was most important…BUILDING A FOUNDATION OF INTIMACY WITH THE HEAVENLY FATHER.
You see, Jesus didn’t spend a majority of His prayer time merely supplicating for only “His needs and wants”, he focused on preparing His soul and heart for what God NEEDED and WANTED from Him, in preparation for His calling. Outside of this instance in scripture, this is the only occasion God allows us to see Jesus as a youth. However, the context prior is a great indicator of his mindset before scripture goes mysteriously silent.
It shows a “pre-teen” portrait of a young Jesus, studious in torah, learning from the sages and scribes in the temple. Then arbitrarily it seems he launches into itinerate ministry almost 18 years later. What was happening in between these two pivotal events? Allow me to to present a pragmatic presupposition that I believe reveals what Christ was doing in the silent years of his life….
I BELIEVE JESUS WAS “PRAYING” IT FORWARD, DOWNLOADING THE FUTURE STRATEGY OF MINISTRY AND THE PATH OF PURPOSE IN HIS HEART FROM THE FATHER..YEARS IN ADVANCE. THAT SOMEHOW, GOD USED HIS NATURAL “BLUE COLLAR” CARPENTRY TRADE, AS A SORT OF SEMINARY/SCHOOL FOR “ON THE JOB TRAINING”…TO PREPARE HIM FOR MINISTRY.
Can you see the value of working hard for what God says He wants you to prepare to become? will you allow the Holy Spirit to use everyday things to TRAIN you to step into your future at His appointed time? many people love the thought of following Christ at 30 years old in powerful ministry, but how many people notice his preparation for ministry… at 12 years old? can you follow Jesus at 12 years old? before you try and follow Him at 30?
This is the call to a Jesus Generation.
